Vaillantella Fowler 1905 -ella (L.), diminutive suffix connoting endearment: in honor of Léon Vaillant (1834–1914), “distinguished ichthyologist of the Museum of Natural History of Paris, and well known for his researches in East Indian ichthyology” (and who described the ´type species in 1902)
Vaillantella cinnamomea Kottelat 1994 Neo-Latin for light brown, referring to its body color (without a conspicuous color pattern)
