Diplomystes Bleeker 1858 diplóos (Gr. διπλόος) or diploū́s (διπλοῦς), twofold or double; mystus, from mýstax (Gr. μύσταξ), moustache, referring to two large barbels on upper lip of Arius papillosus (=D. chilensis); coined as a vernacular name, Diplomyste, by Duméril in 1856

Diplomystes arratiae Muñoz-Ramírez, Colin, Canales-Aguirre, Manosalva, López-Rodríguez, Sukumaran & Górski 2023 in honor of Gloria Arratia, University of Kansas (USA), for her “invaluable” contributions to ichthyology in general and to the family Diplomystidae in particular

Diplomystes camposensis Arratia 1987 -ensis, Latin suffix denoting place, but in this case the name is in honor of Chilean ichthyologist Hugo Campos (1935–1998), who encouraged Arratia to study these catfishes
